For many people, September is a fresh start. We get a little nostalgic as we watch the neighbourhood kids set out for school, ready for the big day. The garden is finishing in a burst of colour and harvest, and autumn plans are in the making.
In keeping with the learning spirit of September, our classes begin this month. “Range” is full, but there is still room in “Knittin’ A Mitten”, beginning September 17 at 5:30. Come see the samples in our studio, if you want a preview! These cozy mittens can be knit in any gauge and size: we plan to tuck a couple of pairs into the car for that moment in October when we realize, with resentful surprise, that our steering wheels are absolutely freezing.
We're also excited to offer new colours of Malabrigo Rios – this yarn comes into its own this season. It’s a high-quality, soft, worsted-Aran superwash with stunning colours, and a medium-sized, plain women’s sweater will take about 6 skeins. (Tin Can Knits’ Flax pullover is a good option for a clean, high-quality, well-written, free pattern.) It’s sweater season, so check your yardage needs and come to the studio while there are still plenty of skeins in the same dye lot!
How do you know how far you’ve come? We cast on a sweater, knowing there are thousands of stitches ahead. It can be daunting, but really it's just a matter of one after the other. We knit while we are listening, while we are talking, watching, waiting and living. The yarn inches out from the ball a little at a time, over and over...and before you know it, it's time to divide for the sleeves.
Like your new fall sweater, Saltwater Purls is a work in progress...and we have finished one round! Come and visit us on Saturday, September 8 for our One Year Anniversary Open House, at the studio between 11 and 5. Call it a birthday, call it an anniversary, or call it “Rnd 1”: we’d like you to help us celebrate reaching our first progress marker. Refreshments will be served, and there may be a special price here and there.
